Un-Plug – The surge protector that unplugs itself, saving your money and your planet.
Ever worry about saving the environment? No? Did you know that even when your lights and other appliances are turned off they still sap energy just by being plugged in? Now there is a no brainer solution. UnPlug is a light sensitive device that unplugs your utilities when you leave the house.
As an energy saving device this product is marketable to a large range of users, though the target audience would lean towards a younger, more environmentally conscious user. The addition of music, lending a humorous edge, skews UnPlug towards a trendy green demographic.
The user is ready to leave the house and turns off the main light. But what about the surge protector with 6 things still sucking power? Not to worry. UnPlug recognizes the owner has left from the change in light and proceeds to unplug itself to the triumphal sounds of Sprach Zarathustra (2001, A Space Odyssey). The user will have saved money and the planet.
Time Out – Microdestinations for your Library
Co-Created by Nien Lam and Allison Walker
ITP held a workshop with Antenna Design. We were given the assignment to ‘design an intervention (= installation or an automated machine) for “interactive services” in public space which will generate a new interaction amongst people.’
My team created a micro-destination station for our NYU Bobst Library for people who need to decompress and create a sense of community or communal experience. There were 5 separate floors, each with a different destination (ordered by altitude: underwater, beach, rainforest, mountainside, night sky) and each was given unique attributes. Every station had increased oxygen flow, headphone jacks, lighting control, and richer soundscapes depending on how many people were sitting with you.

Parasympathizer – Helping you Breathe Better
Co-Created with Steve Aquillano, Ian Cleary
After hearing a presentation by Linda Stone, my team decided to focus on healthier breathing and passive information. After several ideas, we decided on parasympathetic breathing.
The right light would follow the structure of the sympathetic breath (4 seconds breathing in / light fading in, hold for 7 / breath / fade out for 8 seconds). The left light would fade in and out based on a stretch sensor around the user. the lights would be held by our simplified pagoda design and the lights would hang just to the sides of the computer. We chose soothing colors, our inclination was that lights fading in and out were strong enough enough indicators.

Screenplay
Synopsis: In the chaos of the buccaneer town of Never Land, Mr. John Hooksborough, a stoic blacksmith with a dark past, and his native wife Tigerlily, live in peace, despite the townsfolk’s xenophobia. One day, his best friend Starkey brings them the orphan Peter, whom the couple inadvertently adopts. Hooksborough and Peter bond through mutual traumas, but shortly thereafter, the town is disrupted when the mysterious, but popular newcomer Captain Lowst arrives. This is the dark and twisted origin of Captain Hook and Peter Pan.
